Description
Description | The RegionsAdapt initiative is a new global commitment to support and report efforts on adaptation at the state and regional level. On the initiation of Rio de Janeiro and Catalonia, this new initiative aims to establish a cooperative framework for regions to exchange experiences and best practices on their actions and challenges when adapting to climate change. |
---|---|
Objectives | RegionsAdapt goal is to join efforts to ensure improved conditions to achieve resilient territories and prevent irreparable situations and damage to their respective economies, environments and citizens.
By participating, state and regional government commit to collaborate, exchange knowledge and share best practice policy models that foster adaptation and resilience to climate change, pursuing multidimensional and innovative methods, as for example ecosystem-based approaches. This commitment includes to adopt or review plans on adaptation within two years, to implement an adaptation action in one of a series of thematic areas, as well as to report on the progress of the adaptation initiatives through CDP´s States and Regions platform. |
Activities | The RegionsAdapt initiative will support participants to:
Develop regional adaptation strategies or plans utilizing the government expertise within the initiative, and based on the region specific reality; Report adaptation actions through CDP´s States and Regions platform; Submit the reported data to the NAZCA platform; Establish regional metrics, indicators and methodology for monitoring and follow-up according to the territorial specific vulnerabilities and conditions; Promote global peer learning and sharing of best practice models for addressing adaptation issues; and Embed and mainstream actions. |

Progress towards the goals | In 2016, 27 regional governments reported their risks and adaptation actions. |
How are you tracking progress of your initiative | All regional governments who have signed RegionsAdapt have adhered to 3 commitments:
1) Develop or review a strategy/plan on climate adaptation within 2 years of its adherence; 2) Adopt at least one concrete adaptation action among the 7 key priority areas of the initiative; 3) Report the progress of adaptation actions annually. Therefore, RegionsAdapt targets/quantitative objectives are the number of members who were able to deliver each one of these commitments, as follows: 1) Number of regional governments that developed or reviewed a strategy/plan on climate adaptation within 2 years of its adherence; 2) Number of regional governments that adopted at least one concrete action within two years of its adherence; 3) Number of regional governments that have been reporting regularly. Since RegionsAdapt was launched in December 2015, the first assessment of these 3 indicators will occur in December 2017 for the 27 founding members. |
