Description

Description In supporting this Declaration, a signatory commits to demonstrating climate leadership through actions that embrace clean energy, boost efficiency, and limit GHG emissions of business operations and in our through a modal shift to public transport.
Objectives To double the market share of public transport by 2025 (ptx2), which would prevent half a billion tons of CO2 equivalent in 2025.
Activities Outreach and coalition building:
  • Official Partner with UNFCCC for COP 23 and COP 24
  • Partner of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition

Capacity building and knowledge development:

  • Aside from key knowledge publications, advocacy initiatives, and successful events, 2018 also saw a rise in the amount and variety of our training programmes, reaching a total of 200 training days around the world

Policy-making and implementation:

  • UITP held the first official Talanoa Dialogue in the transport sector in Dakar, Senegal, in April 2018, which culminated in the UITP Dakar Dialogue which stresses the need for countries to develop a clear roadmap on transport that includes the promotion and development of efficient and sustainable public transport systems. It also stresses the need to build closer cooperation between national governments and those delivering action on the ground
One or two success stories achieved See the report linked to just above for examples of success stories.

Goals UITP’s Declaration on Climate Leadership demonstrates the public transport sector’s commitment to tackling climate change and responding to one of the biggest economic opportunities of the 21st century. As part of the Marrakesh Partnership, the Declaration’s goal is to double the market share of public transport by 2025.

The Declaration's goal to double the market share of public transport by 2025 would allow us to cater for ever increasing demand for urban transport while decreasing per capita urban transport emissions by 25% (global average) – about half a billion tonnes, which is over and above what technological solutions can achieve alone and would ensure that we would move the transport sector in the direction of the COP 21 Paris Agreement.

The Declaration was supported by over 350 pledges to climate action from more than 110 members of the international public transport community in more than 80 global cities. Actions aimed at giving a greater role to public transport in mobility which will help to decrease the regions carbon footprint. Actions also aimed at reducing their corporate carbon footprint.

See: https://www.uitp.org/sites/default/files/UITP%20DECLARATION%20ON%20CLIMATE%20LEADERSHIP%202018%20REPORT%20OF%20IMPLEMENTATION%20FINAL.pdf

The Declaration was also a commitment to support governments at all levels to provide them with technical support and capacity building through lessons learned from delivering the above action on the ground pledged under the Declaration. This is important because many of the post-2020 national climate strategies – Intended Nationally Determined Commitments (NDCs) - are dependent not just on financial support but also technical and capacity building.

86% of projects aimed at full-scale / city-wide experimentation. The rest are pilot projects, from which 31 pilot tests of hydrogen and electric buses footprint. 30% actions on Buses (clean fuels, efficiency, new lines and low carbon buses); 22% on Trains, trams, metros (new lines and train cars, vehicle efficiency). 7% actions on Combined mobility (enhancements to walking and cycling facilities, car and bike-sharing schemes)

Comments on indicators and goals
How will goals be achieved
Have you changed or strenghtened your goals
Progress towards the goals In terms of the 350 actions pledged by UITP members, since COP 21 examples of implementation could be reported in around 80 cities covering just over 300 projects (86%) of the 350+ projects pledged.
How are you tracking progress of your initiative UITP's Sustainable Development Commission is a panel of global experts on sustainable mobility and acts as the internal UITP governance mechanism for the UITP Declaration. This body is responsible for overseeing and supporting (including reporting) implementation of the 350 pledges to action made under the UITP Declaration.
Available reporting UITP made an assessment of where the public transport sector stands mid-way through the 2025 deadline. This assessment has been made using 2012 data collected in 60 metropolitan areas located in both developed and developing countries. Though public transport supply has nearly doubled compared to 1995, the growth of mobility demand is such that mode share gains in some regions are offset in others as the support of public transport has not matched demand for mobility.

• UITP has also monitored implementation of the 350 actions pledged since 2015 at the COPs. UITP can report that of the 350 actions pledged by UITP members at the 2014 UN Climate Summit, examples of implementation could be reported in 86% of cases in 2018. An increase of 25% compared with this time last year.
